Star- an enormous ball of glowing gases
Gases that a star is made up of- Hydrogen and Helium
Constellations- groups of stars
Galaxies- largest star clusters of all
Milky Way Galaxy- has over one hundred million stars
Sizes of a star- super giants, giants, medium, white dwarfs, and neutron stars
Sun's classification- medium
Red colored star- coolest, about 5,000 degrees F
Blue colored star- hottest, about 50,000 degrees F
Novas and Super Novas- exploding stars that become thousands of times brighter than usual and then become dim again
Parallax- something that astronomers use to find the distance of our star from Earth
Photosphere of the Sun- the lowest layer that gives off light
Chromosphere- the next layer above the photosphere
Corona- releases charged particles as solar wind
Sunspots- areas of the Sun's surface that appear dark because they are cooler than the surrounding areas; temporary features which come and go over days, weeks, or months; increase and decrease in 10 to 11 year pattern called solar activity cycle; related to intense magnetic fields
Solar flares- violent eruptions near a sunspot
Age of the Sun- middle aged; 4.6 billion years old
Distance of the Sun from the Earth- 93 million miles
How long one solar day is- 25 Earth days
Where the Sun's energy is produced- the core
Temperature of the surface of the Sun- 2 million degrees C, one million degrees F
Average diameter of a sunspot- 18,000 km, 11,000 mi
How long it normally takes for a sunspot to form and disappear- 2 weeks
Longest period of time a sunspot might last- 1 year
How large a solar flare can become- 1 billion km, 386,000,000 mi
Solar prominence- red colored gas clouds that quickly shoot up from the Sun's surface for thousands of kilometers
How long a solar prominence lasts- 7 months

Mercury- Closest planet to the Sun; smallest planet; weak magnetic field suggests an iron core; has many craters and high cliffs; no true atmosphere, so the surface temperatures range from very hot to very cold; no moons.
Venus- 2nd planet from the Sun; similar to Earth in size and mass; extremely dense atmosphere of clouds; no moons.
Earth- 3rd planet from the Sun; water exists on the surface as solid, liquid, gas; more than 70% of surface covered with water; atmosphere projects surface from most meteors and Sun's radiation.
Mars- 4th planet from the Sun; called Red Planet because iron oxide in rocks makes them reddish-brown; polar ice caps made mostly of frozen carbon dioxide and frozen water; soil shows no evidence of life; has gullies and deposits of soil and rocks, which may look like the presence of liquid groundwater; thin atmosphere of mostly carbon dioxide; strong winds caused by differences in temperatures between day and night; is tilted on its axis, which causes seasons; two small moons: Phobos and Deimos.

When you go to sleep at night, you probably think all your dolls and stuffed bears don't move. That's not true. When you go to sleep, and whoever you live with is asleep, the toys have freedom. In the daytime when you're home, they have to stay still so you don't know. But at night when everyone is sleeping, they come alive. They jump on the drawers, paint pictures, maybe even party! But there is one tale that is the opposite of that. There was this one toy, named Ted. He was an evil stuffed teddy bear. If you pulled the string, he would talk. But, every night, Ted would awaken while the humans were still asleep. He would force the other toys to do his dirty work. If they didn't, he would whip them with one of the human's belt. The first night a little girl bought him, he knocked over her lamp. Then in the morning, her parents blamed her for it. The second night, he smashed her mirror. The parents blamed her again. The third night, he put bleach on her rug. The parents blamed her again. The fourth night, he painted on her wall, TED WUZ HERE in red paint. The parents were getting suspicious, but blamed the little girl again. "Why is she doing these things?" said the mom. "I don't know, I'm getting kind of worried" replied the dad. The fourth night, Ted shredded her clothes. Now the parents took her to a physiologist. Then, finally the fifth night, the little girl pretended to be asleep. Then she watched in horror as she saw ted hiding cigarettes under her bed. "GOTCHA!!!" she yelled grabbing Ted. She wrestled him until she caught a scissor at the corner of her eye. She took the scissor and cut off Ted's head. That was the end of Ted. The parents still didn't know what happened, but they never talked about it ever since.
